RetinaRisk Case Study

There’s a causal link between high blood pressure and retinal damage that leads to vision problems. Dr. Einar Stefansson, a leading physician in the field of diabetic eye disease and diabetic screening, saw the need to provide healthcare professionals with an accurate and convenient tool to evaluate the individual risk for sight-threatening retinopathy based on a patient’s clinical state.

To help him build his vision, RetinaRisk, he assembled a team of experts from fields like ophthalmology, endocrinology, and statistics. It turned out that was the easy part — now they had to build an app.

“We found a development team, but the initial timeframe and costs they quoted were out of line with our needs,” said Dr. Stefansson.

Dr. Stefansson wanted to focus on designing and building unique app features like a digital risk calculator and data analytics tools, but the realities of app development kept his team bogged down.

That’s when he discovered Onymos’ platform of pre-built app components.

By using Onymos, his team suddenly had all the app dev “basics” covered. Now, developers could spend more time implementing the complex and innovative clinical functionality that made RetinaRisk different from any other app in its space.

“Using Onymos Features, we were able to get to market within one month and leapfrog the competition,” said Dr. Stefansson. “Time to market was extremely important to us. Onymos delivered, allowing us to be the first organization in our medical space with a mobile app.”

  • RetinaRisk used Onymos Access (identity, access, and session management), DataStore (secure connectivity to RetinaRisk’s cloud), Share (social sharing), and Payments (in-app purchases) to instantly introduce practically all of the app’s other necessary (but not unique) functionality.
  • RetinaRisk also leveraged Onymos’ robust language support to include English, Español, Deutsch, and íslenska translations for its users.

Today, RetinaRisk is the #1 app for fighting diabetic retinopathy. In 2021, RetinaRisk and team member Arna Gudmundsdottir were covered in Forbes.

If you need to get to market fast or free up your team to spend more time innovating, Onymos can help.
