Press Release: Onymos National Survey Reveals That 70% of App Development Leaders Are Dissatisfied with Current Levels of Innovation

70% of tech leaders dissatisfied

Findings highlight inefficiencies and growing workloads in application development

SAN FRANCISCO, May 17, 2023 Onymos, developer of the world’s first Features-as-a-Service platform, today announced the findings of its 2023 Application Development Survey, which revealed that 70% of application development leaders are dissatisfied with the amount of time their engineering team has for innovation. The new survey polled more than 100 application development leaders across the U.S. to better understand their current development processes and their satisfaction with those processes.

The survey highlights dissatisfaction among leaders with current approaches to application development due to inefficiencies and growing workloads. The majority of respondents cited issues with: development timelines; time spent on innovation; and time spent on routine activities that are common across the space.

“There is tremendous pressure from the market for companies to innovate and provide applications that provide real value for end-users through novel features and functionality. However, engineering teams and developers are unable to dedicate the appropriate amount of time required for these activities due to overwhelming workloads that primarily consist of maintenance and recouping technical debt,” said Shiva Nathan, Founder and CEO of Onymos. “Companies must find a way to make their development processes more efficient so that their teams can be truly innovative and focus on the activities that contribute to their application and company success.”

The key findings of the survey include:

  • The majority (56%) of leaders reported that the workload for updating apps is increasing year to year
  • Nearly one-third of leaders (30%) state that their teams spend approximately half of their time on maintenance
  • Nearly half of leaders (45%) reported dissatisfaction with how quickly their engineering teams can develop new application features
  • Almost 30% of leaders reported that it takes their engineering team 4-6 months to develop a new web or mobile app, while another 28% stated that it takes more than 6 months

As thousands of applications are released each day into the market – for both consumers and enterprises – companies are facing greater competition. This, as a result, has increased the need for solutions that solve these pressing application development challenges. Not only should these solutions minimize maintenance and limit technical debt, but the solutions should also empower engineering teams and developers to unlock their creative potential to drive innovation and greater user experiences.
